DELBARTON — The Man Lady Billies volleyball team escaped Burch High School last night with a 3-1 win.

Just three days after easily beating the Burch Lady Bulldogs at Man, the Lady Billies struggled in each set.

Man won 25-21 in the first set, then 25-19 in the second. Burch, however, rallied in the third game to win 25-22, forcing a fourth, deciding set, which Man won, 26-24.

In the third set, Ashley Farley served an ace that tied the game at 22 and the Lady Dogs took a 24-22 lead when Man failed to get the ball back over the net two times in a row. Burch then got the win when Man hit the ball out of bounds. In the fourth set, Man trailed most of the game, but tied the game at 21 on Bryanna Donahue’s serve and then took a 22-21 lead on Donahue’s ace. Another Donahue ace made it 23-21 and the Lady Billies went up 24-21 on the next serve.

But, Donahue’s last serve went into the net, giving Burch hope.

The Lady Bulldogs cut their deficit to 24-23 when Man hit the ball into the net and tied the game at 24 on Kaitlyn Lester’s serve.

But, Man took a 25-24 lead when Burch hit the ball past the back out of bounds line and won the match when the Lady Bulldogs batted the ball out of bounds.

“We pulled it out,” Man Coach Orlando Washington said. “We had a performance like that earlier in the year and we lost. It was good that we kept our composure long enough to get the win. That’s good. Bryanna Donahue, in that fourth game, played like a senior. She had a lot of spikes and served really well for us. I’m glad to see her step up for us.”

Man returns to action tonight at Buffalo and then takes on Logan County rival Chapmanville on Wednesday.

Burch Coach Jan Cisco said his team played well.

“We didn’t play well in the first game, not as well as we could have, but we played well in the second game and just came up short,” Cisco said.

Burch returns to action Thursday night at Matewan's Tiger Dome to face Matewan High School Lady Tigers.
