MATEWAN — The Gilbert Lady Lions volleyball team beat both the Burch Lady Bulldogs and the Matewan Lady Tigers last night in a tri-match at the Matewan High School Tiger Dome.
Gilbert downed Burch 2-0, winning 25-19 in both sets, then Matewan beat the Lady Bulldogs, 2-0, winning 25-22 in both sets.
The Lady Lions then beat Matewan 25-19 and 25-21 to win the match.
Gilbert Coach Don Taylor said his team did not play well in the tri-match.
“We’re sluggish,” he said. “But, give Matewan credit, they played well. We had several who played well — in spurts.”
The Lady Lions return to action Monday at Williamson in a tri-match with the Lady Wolves and the Chapmanville Regional High School Lady Tigers.
Matewan Coach Clay Moore said his team played well.
“We’re coming along,” he said. “We haven’t been playing as a team. Tonight, we played better as a team in both games. This is one of our better efforts as a team.”
The Lady Tigers return to action Tuesday at Williamson.
Tug Valley 3, Williamson 1
WILLIAMSON — The Tug Valley Lady Panthers got their third win of the season by beating the Williamson Lady Wolves, 3-1, last night in Williamson.
Williamson beat Tug in the first set of the match, but the Lady Panthers won the next three.
Tug Valley coach Vonda Preston said she was very pleased with her team’s performance.
“We played great,” Preston said. “We played together, we got it up and our serves were great. Ever our JV played well and beat Williamson, 2-0.
“Williamson played well, too. But, everything worked for my girls.”
Lady Wolves Coach Tondra Elkins said her team played good at times.
“The second set was pretty close and they dominated the third, but we played real close with them in the fourth game,” Elkins said. “We came close, but couldn’t pull it out. My girls are hot and cold.”
Elkins said she did see several positives during the game.
“Our serves are getting better and our fundamentals are improving,” Elkins said.
