WEST LOGAN — The town of West Logan will be celebrating Trick or Treat by handing out treats at town hall on October 31 and the town wants to make sure everyone is safe on Halloween.

West Logan Police Chief Robert Ward said it's a good time for parents to start thinking about Halloween safety not only in terms of bright, colorful costumes to avoid traffic accidents, but also in regards to children's nutrition.

Ward said that while dark clothing may seem spookier, it can be a bad idea for little children who might be hard to see at dusk and who can be prone to slipping in and out of traffic around cars.

"Some of the modern masks are really cool, but they can obstruct a child's vision, so you might want to think about doing face paint or prosthetic-style make up instead," Ward said. "The more colorful your child's costume is, the better because it can possibly help motorists to see them."

Ward said it's a good idea to avoid putting open candles inside of Jack-O-Lanterns.

"You should use a flashlight or a light bulb instead to avoid fires," he said. "It's also a good idea for mom or dad to do the carving on the pumpkin."

Ward also recommends that parents give their children glow sticks or flashlights when they take their kids trick or treating.

"You can find flashlights at Walmart and the dollar stores that are inexpensive and good for this," he said. "Keep your kids close to you. Let them know that you want to see them and you want them to see you."

Ward said it's a good idea for parents to check all unwrapped or suspicious-looking candy first and even better to avoid anything but candies that are sealed in factory wrappers.

"You can check them by submerging them in water and looking for bubbles. When in doubt, toss it out," he said.

Ward said some parents will have to take other measures as well for children who are Type-One diabetics.
