Sue Barazi (pronounced Bah-RAH-zee) with the Charleston office of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration said the man was operating an excavator when the early Thursday morning accident occurred.
The man’s identity has not been released. Barazi said he was an employee of Johnson Western Gunite Construction. The Kermit Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched to the tunnel on the Wayne and Mingo county line at about 5 a.m. Thursday.
Barazi said crews were conducting maintenance work inside the Norfolk Southern tunnel when the accident occurred.
Calls to Johnson Western Gunite and Norfolk Southern were not immediately returned.
