MAN — A Man-area resident recently celebrated her 100th birthday and got a surprise gift.

Mary Brown of Amherstdale became a centenarian on July 4.

To honor her, President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama sent her a happy birthday letter.

"Dear Miss Brown, happy 100th birthday, we wish you the very best on this momentous occasion,” Obama’s letter read.

“You have witnessed great milestones, in our nation's history. And your life represents an important piece of America's story. As you reflect upon 100 years of memories, we hope that you are filled with tremendous pride and joy. Congratulations on your birthday. And may you enjoy many more happy years as a centenarian. Sincerely, Michelle Obama and Barack Obama."

Brown had the letter framed.
