When the questions start to roll on the popular game show "Who Wants to be a Millioniare" several people across Logan County have been rooting for one contestant in particular.
Murray, 44, is a 1983 graduate of Chapmanville High School and is the son of Estel Murray, who is also from Chapmanville and is a municipal court judge.
His mother, Antonia "Toni" Flaherty, is from Bellmawr, NJ.
Murray is currently employed as a bartender at the Octo Waterfront Grille in Philadelphia.
Murray told producers that if he won big on the show, he would fulfill his dream of going to nursing school.
When Sam was younger, he was in the Navy and worked at a Naval Hospital. His uncle, Terry Fekete, is a former nurse from the Man area.
"He's my nephew and he grew up in Dehue," Fekete said.
Murray has had lots of good luck so far. The Chapmanville native walked away with $50,000 on a recent episode of “Who Wants To Be A Millionaire” and became the last contestant to qualify for the “Million Dollar Tournament of Ten!” ending up in eighth place on the Tournament Leader Board.
"His mother (Toni) was married to Estill Murray who was the municipal judge in Chapmanville," Fekete. "Toni moved to New Jersey with their two kids. We got an email from his mother and it was a card she recieved from Meredith Vierria. Every day that we watch it we are hoping he does well. He’s a good kid.
Murray has a lot of relatives back here, Fekete said. His first cousin, John, is the deputy director of the Hatfield McCoy Regional Recreation Authority and his other first cousin, Marty Ojeda, is the band director of Logan High. He also has another Aunt and Uncle in the area, Richard Ojetta and his wife, Katy, who operate the Surray House restaurant in Chapmanville.
"He moved away from here about twenty years ago," John Fekete said of his lucky cousin. "We stayed in touch and everybody is watching the show to see how well he is doing.”
