The Logan County Charitable and Educational Foundation, along with other community foundations across the state, are celebrating Community Foundations Week.

West Virginia Governor Joe Manchin III has also proclaimed the week of November 12-18, 2009, as Community Foundations Week in the Mountain State with a proclamation which reads:

"Whereas, citizens and institutions of West Virginia have historically benefited from the continuing generosity of private, corporate, family, individual and community philanthropy; and,

"Whereas, during its 15-year history, the West Virginia Community Foundations Consortium has provided training in national standards and best practices, helping West Virginia community foundations achieve their philanthropic goals and better serve our communities; and,

"Whereas, the West Virginia Community Foundations Consortium provides programs and services to 29 community foundations, county funds and affiliates around the Mountain State whose mission is to build a local community-based endowment; and,

"Whereas, together we can build a solid foundation and improve the future by creating community legacies to benefit all of West Virginia; and,

"Whereas, it is fitting to set aside a time to recognize the efforts of community foundations statewide;

"Now, Therefore, Be it Resolved that I, Joe Manchin III, Governor of the Great State of West Virginia, do hereby proclaim November 12 —18, 2009, as:

"Community Foundations Week in the Mountain State and encourage all citizens to recognize the efforts of its members and donors statewide.

"In Witness Whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Great Seal of the State of West Virginia to be affixed.

"Done at the Capitol, City of Charleston, State of West Virginia, this the Fifteenth day of October, in the year of our Lord, Two Thousand Nine, and in the One Hundred Forty-seventh year of the State."

The Logan County Charitable and Educational Foundation, in its 12 years, has made over $200,000 in grants and scholarships.

In 2008, the Foundation provided leadership in getting the Appalachian Children’s Chorus Cantare Choir started in the Logan Area. They started with 10 choir members September 11, 2008 and now have 18 members. The choristers are in third to eighth grade. More information about the Appalachian Children’s Chorus can be found on the Web: www.wvacc.org. They will have a Christmas concert December 11th at Nighbert Memorial Methodist Church.

The Foundation also funded Financial Education with Jr. Achievement of West Virginia in four classrooms at Man Elementary in 2008 which are still ongoing.

One of the largest grants in 2008 was in partnership with Southern WV Community and Technical College to provide Oral Health services to children and pregnant women. Free Oral Health services are offered at Southern each Tuesday and Thursday.

In addition to the grants, scholarships given at all three high schools in 2008 totaled over $20,000.
