STOLLINGS — Two people were injured in a chain-reaction, three-car crash that involved a school bus carrying vocational students to Logan High School Friday morning before 11:30 a.m.
Logan County Schools Substitute Bus Driver Katrina Sebolt said a green Chevrolet Cavalier stopped in front of her and a gold Chevy S-10 pickup truck hit the Cavalier and she was unable to get her bus stopped in time to avoid hitting the truck.
"The green car came to a dead stop because the guy was walking in the road and the truck rear-ended it and I pounded my brakes and had no where to go," Sebolt said. "I was up off the seat hitting the brakes."
There were 15 students on the bus who were being transported from the Ralph R. Willis Vocational School on Three Mile Curve to Logan High School when the crash occurred. All of the students were checked and released and another school bus was used to transport the students on to LHS from the crash scene. The students were all on campus at Logan High by noon.
Ryan Queen, an 18-year-old student who was riding in the front seat of the bus, said Sebolt did all she could to get the bus stopped, but couldn't avoid hitting the truck in front of her.
"I was in the front seat of the bus talking to Katrina and the next thing I know I saw the green car stop dead in the middle of the road with the truck hitting it in the rear end," Queen said. "Katrina tried her best. She was doing the speed limit and she slammed on her brakes and the next thing we know we hit."
Logan Fire Chief Scott Beckett and several members of the Logan Fire Department responded to the scene and assisted with the cleanup and traffic control.
The names of the two people injured in the crash were not available as of Friday afternoon. Investigating the crash were Logan County Sheriff's Deputies B.D. Cobb, J.A. Lyall, Burley Ferrell and Freddy Ferrell and Logan City Police officers David Adkins and J.R. Adkins. Multiple units from the Logan Emergency Ambulance Service Authority also responded to the crash.
The school bus had to be towed from the scene by a Gaylock's Wrecker Service truck. It suffered damage to the front left fender and bumper. The other two vehicles were also taken away by wreckers. The pickup truck suffered heavy damage to its rear end, as did the Cavalier.
The crash happened near the Stollings Speedway gas station. Traffic was snarled for nearly a mile in both directions for nearly half and hour.
Logan High School Principal Robert Lucas was on the scene not long after the crash happened.
LEASA emergency medical crews checked the students for injuries and released them.
