CHIEF LOGAN STATE PARK — The lights are up and the switch will be thrown Thursday evening as Christmas in the Park opens in Chief Logan State Park.

The annual lights exhibit will be open from dusk until 10 p.m. each night from Thanksgiving night through Dec. 31.

This year, according to Alice Cheek, who helped organize the annual event, Christmas in the Park will feature several new exhibits.

"The 12 Days of Christmas exhibit is new and the four polar bears are new," Cheek said. "There are seven new attractions. Everything is up and ready. All the lights have been changed. The weather has been gorgeous and we have been working nonstop. We had some great workers who helped change out the old lights and we have LED lights in Old Glory, Iwo Jima and the Poinsettias. We try to replace the old lights every year."

Cheek said the lights have all been checked and this year's exhibit may be the best yet.

"Oglebay Park in Wheeling has 70 displays. We went through the park and counted and we have 116 displays — not counting the snowflakes," Cheek said. "We have had a lot of comments that ours are better. We get a lot of good comments about Christmas in the Park.

"This is a big year. We try to add stuff each year. We get a lot of visitors from Kentucky and Ohio. You'd be surprised at how popular it is and how much traffic goes through each night."

Cheek said the volunteer list is full.

"We have some really good people who help us," Cheek said.

"Phyllis Adkins has all the bell ringer spots already filled. We've already got counters to count the money. We've had a lot of good people volunteering. It's been wonderful."

Cheek said billboards are also being erected to advertise Christmas in the Park in other areas to help bring in more people. She said there will be four billboards in different areas and Tri-River Transit is offering a special deal to people wanting to take a ride through Christmas in the Park.

"I heard an ad that said the local bus service, Tri-River Transit, will give you a discount and take you to see Christmas in the Park," Cheek said. "That is great."
