CHAPMANVILLE — Gasoline prices fell yesterday afternoon at several Logan County gas stations.

In Logan and Chapmanville and at other stations in the county, gas prices fell six cents yesterday to $2.69 for a gallon of regular unleaded.

Gas prices had fallen in counties surrounding Logan County at least three weeks ago, but gas stations in the county kept their prices at $2.75. At least two stations in Chapmanville this morning still had gas priced at $2.75 a gallon around 7 a.m.

AAA reported yesterday that the average price for gasoline in West Virginia is currently at $2.67, up nearly 80 cents from this time last year. Gas in Cross Lanes Monday was priced at $2.55, while it was $2.49 a gallon in Pikeville, Ky., last week. In South Williamson, Ky., gas has been priced at $2.69 for more than a month.

In Boone County at Danville, gasoline has been priced at $2.69 for nearly a month. In Huntington, two weeks ago, gas prices were at $2.59 and one station had regular unleaded priced at $2.56 a gallon. Gas prices were at $2.59 a gallon on Route 10 in Lincoln County and were hovering around that price at Salt Rock.

In Mingo County, at Chattaroy’s Victory Lane station, gas was priced at $2.79 a gallon earlier this week, while just a couple miles down the road in Williamson, gas was at $2.69 a gallon.

According to a press release from AAA, the price of oil hit its high for the year at $82 per barrel in late October, but has since become stuck in the upper $70s.

“This narrow trading range has had a calming effect on the financial markets because stable energy prices are helpful to cash-strapped consumers and businesses trying to dig themselves out of debt,” the press release said. “Right now, there is simply too much oil available in the market with which to fine-tune prices, and there seems to be a consensus among the major economic powers that nothing should be done in the energy realm that might damage the ongoing attempts at a global economic recovery.”
