Cheer competition should be won on the floor, not in court

A lawsuit filed by the Tolsia High School cheerleading team has postponed the Class AA state cheer competition set for Saturday at the Charleston Civic Center Coliseum.

The postponement follows a Wayne County Circuit Court decision that restored Tolsia to second place in the regional tournament, qualifying the squad for Saturday’s state finals. Class A and AAA tournaments are proceeding as scheduled.

Tolsia had finished second at the regional tournament, but a 60-point penalty for what the commission maintains was an illegal and unsafe routine dropped the squad to fourth and out of the state tournament.

West Virginia Secondary School Athletics Commission Executive Director Gary Ray said ‘‘Championships should be won on the playing field, not in a courtroom,’’ and we wholeheartedly agree.

When a basketball player commits a foul that allows an opponent to win a game, the teams take the loss. Now, if this lawsuit is successful, any team that loses a game or competition will be able to go to court to have the results overturned. And that’s just wrong. What’s the point in even playing or competing if that’s going to happen?

We hope the WVSSAC fights the lawsuit all the way to the Supreme Court, if need be. Tolsia needs to start work on competing in next year’s regional tournament instead of being such sore losers.
