CHARLESTON (AP) — The state Department of Environmental Protection is appealing a court decision that would allow natural gas drilling in Chief Logan State Park.

The agency wants the state Supreme Court to uphold its 2007 decision that denied Houston-based Cabot Oil & Gas Corp.’s application for nearly three dozen drilling permits in the southern West Virginia park.

Logan Circuit Judge Roger Perry overruled the agency last June, saying Cabot should be permitted to drill in the park.

The state Division of Natural Resources and several environmental groups also are asking the state’s only appellate court to overturn Perry’s ruling.

The deed from the original land owners allows for gas well drilling in the park. Cabot has said it would be a good neighbor and keep out of view of park users. There are already gas wells in Chief Logan State Park, one of which is visible near the entrance.
