A state health officer says the amount of swine flu cases in West Virginia is on the decline.

“H1N1 flu cases continue to decline in West Virginia. This is great news,” State Health Officer Dr. Cathy Slemp said in a press release from the Department of Health and Human Resources. “We do still see the virus circulating in our communities, however, and flu is unpredictable. Only time will tell what role H1N1 will play in this year’s traditional flu season or if there will be another wave of H1N1. So, taking precautions to prevent disease certainly remains wise.”

Slemp said vaccination efforts are going well and thousands of West Virginians have already been vaccinated. She said 512,000 does of swine flue vaccine has been distributed statewide.

Donna Adkins with the Logan County Health Department said last week that the county has plenty of swine flu vaccine available and clinics are being run regularly on Wednesdays for anyone who wants the vaccine.

“We do (have an abundance),” Adkins said. “We’re still having our weekly clinic on Wednesdays. We’re taking walk-ins. I think it’s slowed down because of Christmas and people are busy. But, we are still giving shots every Wednesday to anyone who wants one and to children on Tuesdays.”

Adkins said in the previous interview that vaccine has been sent to all areas of Logan County and the health department is now able to order what it needs from the state. “We’ve set out vaccine to all health care providers and it’s available in other areas other than just the health department,” Adkins said. “We’ve supplied vaccine to different areas of the county. When we need to order more, we are allowed to order from the state so we can keep a good supply.”

In a press release, the state Department of Health and Human Resources is encouraging people to get the H1N1 vaccine before the holidays.

There have been 872 hospitalizations and 19 deaths attributed to swine flu in West Virginia since September, the release said.
