The Bulldogs pounded the Gilbert Lions, 75-39, in the second round of the tournament at the Williamson Fieldhouse in West Williamson, Tuesday night.
Four double-digit scorers led the Bulldogs. Corey Cook and Keith Hill each netted 14 points, while Ryan Hatfield and Dave Hatfield each scored 11.
The Bulldogs had no trouble with the Lions, outscoring them in every quarter to get the lopsided, 36-point win.
Burch led 21-8 at the end of the first quarter and held a 38-19 advantage at the half. The Lions trailed the Dogs 60-30 at the end of the third quarter and were outscored 15-9 in the final period.
Troy Starr scored eight points for Burch, Zac Runyon added seven, Jacob Stratton scored four and Cody Williamson and Gabriel Vinson each netted two.
Cook recorded a double-double, as he dished off 11 assists. He also grabbed two rebounds and got two steals. Stratton led the Bulldogs in rebounding with 10 boards. He also got three steals and blocked one shot.
Williamson reeled in five rebounds, gave an assist and got a steal. Ryan Hatfield gave four assists and got three rebounds. Dave Hatfield got three rebounds and a pair of steals. Josh Cassell got four boards. Gabriel Vinson and Keith Hill each yanked down three rebounds. Starr handed off three assists and got a rebound. Mike Burke grabbed two rebounds and got a steal. Runyon got a steal and a rebound. Jordan Cook and Chase Dotson each grabbed a rebound.
Burch shot 60.5 percent on the night, according to Coach Kevin Hatfield.
“I thought everybody played well,” Coach Hatfield said. “We shot the ball well and did a good job on the boards. We also did a good job contesting their shots. Corey Cook put us on the right track offensively and Jake did a good job on the boards again. Right now, we’re playing as a team and we don’t care who scores. We just want to win.”
Kyle Smith led the Lions with 17 points, while Chris Carter scored six, Matt Lester added five, Ryan Altizer dumped in four, Gabe May, Roger Ellis and Cody Houck each scored two and Cody Sinclair finished with a foul shot. Altizer and Houck suffered from foul trouble early on and fouled out late in the game.
Gilbert Coach Walt Cline said it’s hard to beat a team when its players are as hot-handed as Burch.
“I thought they shot at least 75 percent. They shot the lights out,” Cline said. “They’re a good shooting team. When a team is that hot, it takes you out of your game and forces you into theirs and we’re not a team that can let that happen.” Burch improves to 3-1 with the win and travels to Man Saturday night.
Gilbert falls to 0-3 and will host Mount View on Tuesday.
