The Department of Highways is able to treat snow-covered roads better this year due to having a larger supply of salt, according to a DOH official.
Last year, the DOH crews had to be thrifty with road salt. This year, though, road salt is in good supply, Tim Pullen, interim supervisor at the Logan DOH said this morning.
“We’ve got plenty of it,” Pullen said from his cell phone. Pullen was driving the highways and checking the road conditions this morning.
“Basically, we’re using a little more salt this year because we’ve got it,” Pullen added. “We’ve got trucks of salt coming today. When we need more, all we have to do is order it.”
The DOH supervisor said motorists don’t need to worry about salt supplies running low. He said if more salt is needed, it can be ordered.
Pullen said calcium is used in addition to salt to melt the snow and ice. He said gravel is added to the mix to help with traction.
Pullen said he and his crews have driven the Logan County highways from Logan to the Mingo and Wyoming County borders and the roads were wet, but drivable around 10:15 a.m. this morning.
