Billies spank Matewan, 88-45

MAN – The Man High School boys’ basketball team lost three times to Class A section rival Matewan last season, including a setback in the sectional tournament.

The Hillbillies, however, got revenge on the Tigers on Friday night as Man hammered Matewan, 88-45, at the Man Memorial Fieldhouse to improve to 3-4 on the season.

Man jumped out to a 25-14 lead on the Tigers after one quarter of play and the rout was on.

The Billies outscored Matewan 27-8 in the second quarter to lead 52-22 at the half.

Man then outpointed the Tigers 17-8 in the third to go on top 69-30 after three quarters of play. The Billies bested the Tigers 19-15 in the fourth to finish off the win.

Matewan dropped to 1-4 on the season with the loss.

Man, coached by Harvey Arms, made 32-of-69 field goals for 46.4 percent for the game, including 12-of-31 from 3-point range. Matewan was ice cold, making only 18-of-61 shots from the floor for 29.5 percent. The Tigers were just 3-of-16 from 3-point territory.

Man made 12-of-21 free throws for 57.1 percent, while the Tigers were only 6-of-19 for 31.6 percent.

Travis Hurley led the Billies with 24 points. He also had three rebounds, three assists and one steal. Hurley was 5-of-13 from 3-point range and is now just 15 points shy of 1,000 for his career at Man High School.

Ryan Crum had 12 points, two boards, two steals and two assists for the Billies.

Jordan Simpson finished with nine points, nine assists, four rebounds and one steal.

Tyler Browning had eight points, five boards, two assists and made two 3-pointers.

Andrew Lusk contributed six points, four boards and one assist.

Adam Copley came off the bench to score 14 points, grab six boards, hand out two assists and have one steal. He sank two 3s on the night.

Cody Frye had seven points off the bench with four steals, two assists and one board.

Reserve Bill Deel had five points, four boards and one steal.

Tyler Bragg had two points, four rebounds and one assist.

T.J. Hoosier chipped in with one point, 11 rebounds, two steals and one assist.

Micah Mahon led Matewan with nine points and 11 rebounds.

Thomas Simpkins had eight points and nine boards, while Corey Daniels had eight points and two rebounds.

Cody Centers also had eight points for the Tigers.

Chaz Clusky had five points, three assists and two steals.

Nathaniel Mitchell contributed three points and five rebounds, while John Bailey also had three points for the game.

Nick Mitchell had one point.

Man returns to action on Tuesday night at Gilbert.
