The victim of a fiery crash has been identified in an arrest report filed in Logan County Magistrate Court.

The report said Sherry Jackson was the victim of the Monday night crash.

Sarah Whitney Pack, 23, of Man, is being held on a $100,000 cash bond at the Southwestern Regional Jail in Holden on the charge of DUI causing death.

Pack appeared before Logan County Magistrate Dwight Williamson yesterday afternoon after being released from Logan Regional Medical Center where she was treated for the injuries she suffered in the late Monday night crash near the Verdunville exit of State Route 73 heading into Logan.

The magistrate court report said Pack was driving a 2006 Ford Fusion traveling east on State Route 73 when she struck a 1997 Dodge Neon traveling in the same direction “driven by Sherry Jackson from the rear and caused death to the victim.

“Upon speaking to (Pack), an extremely strong odor of an alcoholic beverage was emitting from her breath. (Pack) was unable to perform (a) field sobriety test due to being transported to Logan Regional Medical Center for injuries sustained in the wreck. Upon attempting to locate a registration and insurance card for (Jackson’s) vehicle, these officers observed three 12-ounce Bud Light Lime bottles empty inside the vehicle.”

West Virginia State Police Sgt. Brian Brown said it may take up to two weeks to get a positive identification on the woman’s body.

The crash happened on the bridge just before the Verdunville exit off State Route 73 in Logan around 10:05 Monday night. When firemen arrived on the scene two minutes after the call came in to 911, the car was already fully engulfed and badly mangled, Logan Fireman Nick Ferrell said yesterday.

West Virginia State Police Troopers E.B. McClung and T.D. Kuhn are the arresting officers and are investigating the fatal crash. Pack was arrested and booked at the Southwestern Regional Jail at Holden at 3:10 a.m. Tuesday.

The crash had traffic tied up for nearly three hours.

“There was major debris in the road,” Ferrell said.

The body of the crash victim was taken to the State Medical Examiner’s office in South Charleston, according to Sgt. Brown.
