A local man with an extensive police record was arrested on burglary charges again.
• Michael David Hatfield, 31, of Sarah Ann, was arrested by West Virginia State Police Troopers J.B. Frye and P.A. Jones for nighttime burglary, grand larceny, being a felon in possession of a firearm and possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver on Jan. 15.
According to police reports the officers received a complaint from the victim about a burglary in Sarah Ann where someone stole several items including a 9mm handgun.
"Through investigation and speaking with witnesses, it was determined the accused, Michael Hatfield did forcibly enter the victims' residence and steal several items from within, in excess of $1,000," the report states, noting that Hatfield was not allowed to possess a firearm due to felony and domestic violence convictions in 2006 and 2007. "This officer along with Sgt. J.B. Frye did recover several of the stolen items from within the accused's residence and said pistol from a vehicle in the driveway. The accused also had in his possession several different schedule (controlled) narcotics.
He was booked at the Southwestern Regional Jail at Holden at 8:33 p.m.
Local police have called Hatfield a "perennial repeat offender" with over 20 arrests for home confinement violation, burglary, grand larceny, shoplifting, driving on a revoked license and drug charges since 1997. If convicted, Hatfield may face the three strikes law this time as two of his new charges are felonies.
Hatfield was not the only person arrested recently on theft or burglary charges, however.
• Daniel Ryan Smoot, 30, of Accoville, was arrested by Sgt. W.D. "Dave" Walls of the Man Police Department for nighttime burglary on Jan. 19.
According to police reports on Nov. 28, 2009, between the hours of 6 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. "the accused broke a ground level window out at the Bruce McDonald United Methodist Church in South Man and entered the basement," allegedly taking a Vizio flat screen tv/DVD combo. "The accused then exited the side door of the sanctuary and dropped two documents with his name on them — An EMT miner's card and a Logan-Mingo Area Mental Health Inc. receipt, both with the accused's name on them." A second criminal complaint filed by WVSP Tpr. T.D. Boggs states that on Dec. 4, 2009, at 2:15 "the defendant Daniel Smoot went into the residence of the victim....and stole a 32 inch television while she was chasing him out the door."
A third criminal complaint filed by Sgt. Walls of the Man PD states that on Sept. 30 Smoot allegedly "entered the victim's residence around 2 p.m." by picking the lock with a credit card. "After entering the victim's residence, the accused admitted to stealing a Gateway laptop computer and a Kodak digital camera." Smoot allegedly "admitted to selling the laptop for $70 and the camera for $20 in cash.
He was booked at the regional jail at 5:20 p.m.
• Joshua Workman, 19, of Matewan, was arrested by Tpr. R.G. Flippen for grand larceny and improper registration on Jan. 13. According to police reports on Jan. 13, at 7:30 p.m. the officer received a call from Hagan's Used Auto about two unknown men taking 1999 Chrysler for a test drive and not returning.
"This officer then had a Be On Look Out alert placed on the vehicle," the report states, noting the trooper went looking for the vehicle which was then pulled over by Deputy Burly Ferrell who found it had the wrong plates.
"When questioned by this officer the accused advised he had planned on returning the vehicle at a later time to the victim and retrieving his vehicle. This officer compared the Vehicle Identification Numbers on the stolen vehicle report and found a match. The stolen vehicle was towed from the scene,” the report states.
He was booked at the regional jail at 10:40 p.m.
• Richard Dwayne Davis, 35, of Logan, was arrested by Patrolman Mark Dickerson of the Logan Police Department for shoplifting on Jan. 9. According to police reports the officer responded to a shoplifting call at Walmart where store security told him that Davids allegedly came into the store to return an item.
"After exchanging, Davis....exited the store then reentered and went into the jewelry department where Davis removed a Timex watch from the package and concealed it on his person," the report states. "Davis then attempted to exit the store without making a purchase." Dickerson checked and found that Davis had a prior conviction from another state n 1998.
He was booked at the regional jail at 8:55 p.m. Total value of the item taken was $35.00. Davis will face $162.50 in court costs as well as a $70 fine.
