Tigers beat Point; Wildcats fall in game at WVU

CHAPMANVILLE — The Chapmanville Regional High School boys’ basketball team won its third straight game and improved to 7-2 overall and 3-1 in the Cardinal Conference with last Saturday night’s 67-49 win at home over Point Pleasant.

Matt Cook led Chapmanville with 17 points.

Todd Terry had 16, Cliff Hall 14 and Dustin Woody nine. Ethan Brumfield had five points, while Brooks Cooper and Bubba Conley had two each.

Jacob Templeton had 12 and Jacob Wamsley 11 to pace Point Pleasant, which dropped to 6-3 on the season.

The Tigers led 20-8 after one quarter before the Black Knights outscored Chapmanville 20-9 in the second to pull to within 29-28 at the half. The Tigers then outpointed Point Pleasant 16-8 in the third to take a 45-36 lead. Chapmanville outscored Point 22-13 in the fourth to pull out the win.

Chapmanville is scheduled to return to action Tuesday at Wayne in another Cardinal Conference game before hosting Class AA sectional rival Tug Valley on Friday night.

Tug Valley lost 86-76 on Saturday night at Pikeview. Channing Preece netted 24 points to lead the Panthers. Michael Evans had 18, Alston Vance 16 and Nathan Brewer 13.

Baltimore City College (Md.) 70, Logan 49

MORGANTOWN — The Class AAA No. 1-ranked Logan Wildcats, playing their third game in as many days and fourth contest in the last five days, lost 70-49 to Baltimore City College (Md.) on Saturday night at the WVU Coliseum in Morgantown.

City College, the defending Class AA state champs in Maryland, led 32-24 at the half as Logan senior all-state guard Noah Cottrill battled foul trouble.

Cottrill was playing at his future home, WVU. The Mountaineers played Ohio State earlier in the day on the same floor.

City College led 48-37 after three quarters of play, then outscored the Wildcats 22-12 to notch the win.

Paul Williamson led the Wildcats with 18 points and broke over 1,000 points for his career. He was held to eight points last Friday night in Logan’s 74-59 King Coal Classic win over Princeton Day Academy, another Maryland school.

Cottrill finished with 17.

Deyonta Coleman was held to four points after a 26-point performance against Princeton Day.

Jordan Canada and Timmy Rein had three each.

Bryce Dalton and Gary Miller each chipped in with two points.

Logan dropped to 9-2 on the season and saw its eight-game winning streak snapped. The last loss by the Wildcats was a 79-55 defeat at the hands of Mountain State Academy on Dec. 16 in the Hoops Classic at the Charleston Civic Center.

The Wildcats have two more home games this week as Logan hosts Riverside on Tuesday and Winfield on Friday night.

The Cats then play at Chapmanville on Feb. 2. Logan beat the Tigers, 96-91, earlier in the season in a memorable county clash on Jan. 12 at Willie Akers Arena.

GIRLS — Gilbert 72, Tug Valley 61

GILBERT – The Gilbert High School girls’ basketball team ran its record to 6-4 on the season with Monday night’s 72-61 win over 2A Mingo County rival Tug Valley at home.

The Lady Lions led 17-10 after one quarter, 32-29 at the half and 49-42 after three. Gilbert then outscored the Lady Panthers 23-19 in the fourth quarter to notch the win. Crystal Lester and Danielle Butcher led Gilbert with 19 points each, while Keasha Browning poured in 17 points. Brittani Kirk had seven, Shawna Browning five, Chrissy Farmer three and Catherine Browning two.

Tug Valley (4-8) was paced by Elizabeth Evans and Tabby Mounts, who tallied 18 and 16 points respectively.

Karah Sheppard had nine and Hailee Ward eight for the Lady Panthers.

Paige Runyon and Delena Smith had four each and Desirae Vance had two.

Tug Valley was 19-of-24 from the free throw line. Gilbert made 19-of-28 of its foul shots.

TVHS hosts Pikeville (Ky.) on Thursday. Gilbert plays at Westside on Wednesday night.
