Reports to The Logan Banner said the Matewan High School cheerleader was assaulted in the parking lot at Matewan High School by a Phelps (Ky.) High School girls basketball player following the Phelps at Matewan boys basketball game Monday night.
Reports said the cheerleader suffered a dislocated shoulder and a broken collarbone in the altercation and had to be taken to a local hospital for treatment.
Reportedly, there was no security at the game that night.
Matewan High School Principal Marcella Charles said Matewan Police Chief David Stratton responded to the scene and is investigating the incident.
“There was an incident and the matter is being investigated,” Charles said. “The principal at Phelps High School (Mike Hamilton) has been in direct communication with me and he is continuing to investigate. He is really working with me on this. I think the matter will be resolved.”
Charles said the incident happened 45 minutes after Matewan’s 67-59 loss to Phelps at the Tigerdome.
The cheerleader’s condition was not known as of press time Wednesday morning. Several reports to The Logan Banner identified the girl, but since she is a minor, her name is being withheld.
Stratton was in court this morning and was unavailable for comment on the matter.
The Phelps High School principal was also unavailable for comment this morning.
The identity of the girl who assaulted the Matewan cheerleader was not available to The Logan Banner this morning and she is reportedly a minor, too.
The cause of the fight is still under investigation, Charles said.
