The last few months have been pretty busy for local municipal police departments.

Logan Police Chief E.K. Harper told The Logan Banner that his totals were in for the year and the numbers were pretty impressive considering the Logan PD's manpower.

In 2009, the Logan Police Department took 316 complaints; made 320 arrests, handled 74 traffic accidents; issued 502 citations (177 of which were paid in full and 325 of which were partially paid) collecting 2,393 in red ticket money and $12,442.50 in yellow ticket money for the city's coffers.

November was a particularly busy month for the Logan Police Department which had more than just the routine Christmas shoplifting and burglary season to deal with as the Logan PD took the lead in a bank robbery case which happened in the city of Logan. Harper's department worked closely with the West Virginia State Police and the Federal Bureau of Investigation and soon a lead suspect and two suspected coconspirators were taken into custody. Harper himself was there for the arrest of the lead suspect.

It wasn't the only serious case in November either.

On Nov. 16, the Logan Police Department arrested a juvenile in a stolen car who had marijuana, cocaine and a gun with him.

"He was running from us," said Harper who noted the juvenile actually was placed on home confinement and not into state custody. Harper and his department were very disappointed in that.

In December the Logan Police Department handled 10 complaints; made 27 arrests; handled five accidents; and issued 37 citations.

In October the Logan PD handled 25 complaints; made 31 arrests; handled six accident reports and issued 50 citations.

In September, the Logan PD handled 29 complaints; made 21 arrests; handled 11 accidents and issued 33 citations.

In August the Logan PD handled 33 complaints; made 20 arrests; handled three accidents and issued 34 citations.

In June the Logan PD handled 38 complaints; made 28 arrests; handled three accidents and issued 42 citations.

In May the Logan PD handled 30 complaints, made 29 arrests; handled six accidents and issued 59 citations.

• West Logan Police Chief Robert Ward said his department had been lucky with very few incidents in November and December.

Ward said charges were refiled against an individual who ripped off several people in the West Logan area and that a hearing was set where the defendant told the magistrate he was supposed to get his charges dropped if he went into Drug Court.

"He got out of jail when he agreed to pay restitution, but he never paid it and he got in trouble on another theft arrest later," Ward said, noting that he and another police officer felt disappointed that the time and work done gathering evidence on the cases seemed to be wasted in the courthouse.

It was a slow winter and fall crimewise with few complaints other than a fence being struck when the streets were glazed over with ice, he said.

In November Ward had one felony arrest for probation violation and investigated a claim of terroristic threatening where a new resident was allegedly being harassed by a stranger claiming the last resident of the building she occupied owed him a drug debt.

Ward said the month of September had been a quiet one with the major problems his department faced being complaints about some stray dogs in the neighborhood and three automobile accidents near a pizzeria.

Ward said in the month of September there were no reported thefts and only one domestic argument, which was resolved with a domestic petition. There were no reported accidents in September, but there were three within one hour in October.

Chief S.W. Simpkins of the Man P.D. said it had been a slow fall and winter for his department.

In November the Man Police Department handled one felony arrest for delivery of a controlled substance; seven misdemeanor charges including destruction of property, fleeing, obstructing an officer, petit larceny, indecent exposure and disorderly conduct; issued three citations, two for no insurance and one for speeding; and one warning citation. The Man PD also handled three investigations on burglary, petit larceny and obtaining money by false pretenses.

In September the Man PD handled three felony arrests for breaking and entering and burglary, seven misdemeanor arrests, including DUI, destruction of property and trespassing and issued 10 citations four for speeding the others for DUI and other charges.
