CHAPMANVILLE — The Boy Scouts of America, Chief Cornstalk District, held its annual Eagle Scout and Adult Recognition Dinner on January 22 at the Logan Country Club in Chapmanville.

Guest speaker for the event was Mike Hamrick, director of Athletics at Marshall University.

Along with honoring local scouts in the district who had achieved Eagle Scout status during the year 2009, the district also honored five adults for their volunteerism and two District Merit Awards.

A press release from the Boy Scouts said the area Eagle Scouts earned recognition for making a difference in their communities due to their dedication to five of Scouting’s core values: Leadership, character, community service, achievement and the outdoors. Through that commitment, five area Eagle Scouts were honored: Eagle Scout Seth Simon of Williamson Troop 321; Dustin Ferrell from Canada, Ky., Troop 321; Dakota Farley of South Williamson, Ky., Troop 321; Timothy Ball from Matewan, Troop 3, and Jacob Potter of Madison Troop 392.

One individual was honored during the dinner for being a member of the Boy Scouts of America for the last 75 years. James H. “Buck” Harless was presented his 75 year service pin and was honored for being a valued Friend of Scouting. Without scouting volunteers many things would not be possible. Also receiving special awards for 2009 by the Chief Cornstalk District were five top adult volunteers: Kem Abraham of Chapmanville, Troop 58; Danny Cook of Hewitt, Troop 131; Joe Gero of Madison, Troop 289; Jackie Cook of Hewett, Pack 131; and Terry Harvey of Man, Troop 584. The District Award Of Merit, which is the districts highest adult volunteer award, was presented to two very deserving individuals: Joe Linville of Madison Troop 289 and Annette Felty of Madison Pack 392.

The Chief Cornstalk District also celebrated the 100th anniversary of Boy Scouting during the dinner. For 100 years, the press release said, the Boy Scouts of America has created a strong foundation of leadership, service, and community for millions of America’s youth.

“The Boy Scouts of America, one of the nation’s largest and most prominent values-based youth development organizations, provides a program for young people that builds character, trains them in the responsibilities of participating in citizenship, and develops personal fitness,” the press release said.
