The Lions took an 8-0 lead early in the first quarter and never looked back. They outscored Burch 17-9 in the first quarter and 9-5 in the second to take a 26-14 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Gilbert then outpointed the Bulldogs 18-13 in the third quarter to build a 44-27 advantage heading into the final stanza and then topped Burch 15-6 to ice the win.
Ryan Altizer led the Lions with a game-high 22 points, including 10 in the first quarter, while Chris Carter scored 12, Dalton Bailey and Cody Houck each netted seven, Kyle Smith poured in six, Ashton Cline dumped in three and Josh Carter finished with two.
The Lions made 20 field goals, including five 3-pointers, four of which came from Chris Carter in the second half. From the charity stripe, Gilbert made 14-of-22 foul shots.
“We’ve been playing well since we beat Burch the first time,” Gilbert Coach Walt Cline said. “We rebounded and handled their pressure and made our shots. We’re playing as a team right now and as long as we play as a team, we can beat anybody.”
Burch was paced by Jacob Stratton with eight points, six rebounds, one assist, one steal and a shot block. Ryan Hatfield scored seven, grabbed two rebounds, gave one assist and got a steal. Keith Hill scored six points on two 3s and gave two assists, got two steals, blocked two shots and got a rebound.
Dave Hatfield scored five and grabbed three rebounds. Troy Starr scored four, got four steals, gave two assists and got a rebound.
Zac Runyon scored a 3-pointer. Corey Cook gave four assists and got three rebounds and a steal. Mike Burke grabbed a pair of rebounds and got an assist. Chase Dotson reeled in a board and Cody Williamson handed off an assist. Gabriel Vinson played, but did not score.
The Bulldogs struggled on the boards, getting only 19 total rebounds. Burch only got two offensive rebounds the entire night.
The Bulldogs suffered from a poor shooting night from the field, making only 13-of-42 for 31 percent shooting. From the foul line, Burch sank 3-of-6 free throws.
Burch Coach Kevin Hatfield said his team has to start shooting better if they hope to win any more games.
“We have to learn how to shoot,” Coach Hatfield said. “We have to play perfect defense and be perfect rebounding the ball because we’re not shooting the ball well. Until we start shooting better, we’ll continue to struggle.”
The Bulldogs fall to 9-6 with the loss and are scheduled to play at Van on Tuesday.
Gilbert improves to 7-6 and were scheduled to play yesterday at Tolsia.
GIRLS — Gilbert 46, Burch 31
DELBARTON — The Gilbert Lady Lions outscored the Burch Lady Bulldogs in every quarter Friday night and beat the hosts 46-31 at Burch High School in Delbarton.
Gilbert led Buch 13-11 at the end of the first quarter and the Lady Bulldogs tied the game at 13 to start the second quarter, but the Lady Lions reclaimed the lead and held a 28-19 lead at halftime.
The Lady Lions then outscored Burch 9-5 in the third and 8-7 in the fourth to take home the 14-point victory.
“Burch had a hard time scoring,” Gilbert Coach Don Taylor said. “But, we didn’t handle the ball well in the second half and we seemed to lsoe our focus at times. Anytime you can come to Burch and win, it’s a good win. Burch is a good sectional foe and this is a good win.”
Crystal Lester led the Lady Lions with a game-high 22 points, while Danielle Butcher chipped in 10, Brittani Kirk scored six, Kalenia Ellis and Brianna New each scored three and Chrissy Farmer added a foul shot.
Burch was led by Haley Church’s 14 points. She also blocked four shots, got four steals and four rebounds and gave an assist. Kim Smith was next with six points, four rebounds, two steals and one assist.
Cheyenne Moore nettted five points, grabbed six rebounds, gave an assist and got a steal. Stephanie Brock scored two, gave five assists, got three steals and grabbed two rebounds.
Brittany Maynard scored two. Kayla Cisco netted two, grabbed five rebounds and blocked one shot. Bri Smith scored one point and blocked a shot. Cayla Hatfield got a pair of steals and a rebound and handed off an assist.
“We turned the ball over 28 times and you can’t do that and be successful,” Burch Coach Melvin Cunningham said. “Gilbert did a great job on the foul line and their coaches did a great job preparing them. They played well.”
Burch falls to 7-8 on the year with the loss and was scheduled to play yesterday at Tug Valley.
Gilbert improves to 8-6 with the win and will play Monday at Class AA powerhouse Iaeger.
