The Class AAA No. 2-ranked Logan High School basketball team bounced back from Friday night’s loss to Morgantown by beating No. 3 Capital 99-93 in overtime on Saturday in the Big Atlantic Classic at Beckley’s Raleigh County Convention Center.

Logan, now 13-3 on the season, had lost 74-59 to No. 9 Morgantown on Friday in its first Beckley tournament game.

Against Morgantown, Logan made just 3-of-22 second half field goals, including 0-for-12 in the fourth quarter.

It was a different story against the Cougars on Saturday, however.

With the game tied 73-73 at the end of regulation, the Wildcats exploded in the extra period, outscoring Capital 26-20 and shooting 7-of-7 from the field.

Noah Cottrill led the Wildcats with 31 points and eight assists as Logan ended an 11-game winning streak by Capital (12-2). He was just 11-of-20, however, from the free throw line and did not make a single 3-point shot for the first time in his prep career.

Paul Williamson tallied 18 points for the game.

Bryce Dalton nailed four 3-pointers and had 17, while Deyonta Coleman netted 16 points.

Logan trailed by as many as 12 points in the first half but then went on a 14-0 run to retake the lead in the third quarter.

Tommy Gwinn had 13 points and 13 rebounds for Capital. James Morris and Jeff Harris came off the bench to score 18 and 16 points respectively.

Mark Hale led the Cougars in scoring with 19 points.

Logan is scheduled to get back into action on Saturday night at Wheeling Park.

As predicted Morgantown is a dangerous team with a very strong inside game. All it takes is for a top 5 team to be a little off and Morgantown will defeat them. The big news is that the trip to Wheeling may not happen due to the weather. It has been snowing in the northern panhandle for eight straight days and there has not been school since last thursday. Coupled with the school rule no school no practice/games, Wheeling Park has not played a game since January 28, and has also not been able to practice as well. This is unfortunate as the team was starting to hit its stride.Long layoffs are not good for basketball teams as you can expect continuity is lost. The same thing happened when Park visited Logan earlier in the year and it showed on the court. No offense to the Logan team they were the better team that night. I would have liked to seen these two teams at full strength for the rematch. Perhaps it will happen in Charleston. If the torid weather continues it appears that Park will have to play four nights in a row against very good teams from Zanesville, Preston, Parkersburg South and possibly Logan.
