WVU’s fans giving state a bad name

West Virginia University sports fans are already known nationwide for their couch-burning antics. Recently, we’ve been back in the spotlight for cursing and throwing things onto the court.

It got so bad during the Pitt at WVU game recently that West Virginia Basketball Coach Bob Huggins took the microphone and told people to stop throwing things onto the court and one of Pitt’s assistant coaches was hit in the face with a flying object.

This is no laughing matter and it’s taking bad sportsmanship to a very dangerous extreme.

These are just games, people. Calm down, sit down and shut up. Chant if you want, but keep it clean. Boo all you want, but don’t throw things onto the court or field.

A school official said last week in a radio interview that he believes the crowd this year isn’t as bad as it has been in previous years. It must have really been bad then from what we’ve seen this year.

Last night against Villanova, the WVU crowd did show an improvement in its conduct and we’re glad. We hope the conduct of fans continues to get better.

If it had gotten any worse, someone was going to get hurt.

Cursing players, coaches and officials should not be allowed at games.

Throwing things, however, should get someone ejected from a game and barred for life.

The NCAA is going to have to crack down on these profane and abusive fans and schools are going to have to increase the security at the games just to make sure no one gets hurt.

These are just games and there is no call for cursing players and coaches and throwing things on the court. When fans do that, it makes it dangerous for everyone involved.
