CHIEF LOGAN STATE PARK — Even before the Chief Logan Rec Center is fully operational, several members are already making good use of the walking track and tennis courts.

According to Chief Logan Rec Center Director Tim McCoy, several people have been coming to walk the track and the rec center is at least several days away from a soft opening.

“We’re working with the state and going through the state to purchase equipment is unfortunately a lengthy process,” McCoy said of the delay in opening the rec center, which was already supposed to be open for business as of late 2009, but bureaucratic red tape has delayed the center’s opening.

As the building was being developed, there were a lot of change orders and change orders take a long time to process,” McCoy said.

The rec center received some good news recently, though — the manufacturer of the exercise equipment has set a ship deadline of Feb. 24 for all the equipment.

“What many people don’t understand is that this equipment is not products that just sit on a shelf waiting to be ordered,” McCoy said. “It’s made once it’s ordered and all the orders are filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Some of the equipment should be arriving within the next two weeks. By the first week of March, we expect to have all the pieces in place.”

McCoy said he believes people will be pleased with the rec center and all it has to offer.

“It will be well worth the wait,” McCoy said. “A lot of time and research development went into building the rec center and accommodating the most people. This rec center will be user friendly. The equipment is really easy to learn how to use it.”

So far, nearly everyone has been happy with the rec center.

He said before the rec center was built, people had to go to other, bigger cities if they wanted to get a good workout.

“This facility will have everything people need and they won’t have to travel outside the area to get a good workout,” McCoy said.

The rec center director also said most people are amazed at what the facility has to offer. “Lots of people have come through and have taken tours and we always get a really good response. We’ve gotten a really good response to our membership drive, too. I think people will be dazzled by the rec center when they come in to see it. For us life-long Logan Countians, this is a dream come true.”

The Chief Logan Rec Center is located just off U.S. Route 119 (Corridor G) near the Crawley Creek exit.

The rec center was built with funds from the state and has been under construction for more than a year.

A year’s membership to the rec center costs a family of four just $360.
