The Lady Rebels lost twice this season to Scott by 58-48 and 62-32 scores. The two are favored to meet in Friday night’s sectional championship game. Both the winner and runner-up will advance to the upcoming regional tournament.
Tolsia also lost this season to Spring Valley (42-41), Chesapeake, Ohio (47-44), Lawrence County, Ky. (52-51) and Huntington St. Joe (72-51). The Rebels beat 3A Logan three times.
Chapmanville has had a good season under first-year head coach David Williamson. The Lady Tigers are led by senior cousins Lydia and Jenna Vance, sophomore twin sisters Allison and Jenna Evans, senior Brittani Lowe, sophomore Kelli Garrett and seniors Brianna Blankenship, Bre Thomas and Brooke Mounts.
Tolsia, coached by veteran mentor Ric Morrone, are led by seniors guards Kara Pollinger (5-7) and Amber Finney (5-7).
Tolsia, formed in 1988 with the consolidation of the former Fort Gay and Crum high schools, has had a solid tradition over the years in girls’ basketball and has made it to the state tournament numerous times.
In 1997, Tolsia was Class AA runner-ups to Tucker County as the Rebels lost 95-72 in the championship game. Tolsia was also state runner-ups in 1999 as the Rebels fell 67-33 to Oak Glen in the finals.
Chapmanville and Tolsia will be seeing each other more often in every sport beginning next season. That’s when Tolsia High School is to become the seventh member of the Cardinal Conference. The Cardinal has been a six-team conference for two years following the upgrade to Triple-A status by Logan and Winfield, which bolted from the league.
