In an effort to keep a former classmate's memory alive, Derek Bowen is helping to organize a benefit concert on Friday for the Kimberly Pierce Memorial Scholarship Fund.

Bowen is organizing the sixth annual concert to raise money to support a scholarship which has been established at Southern West Virginia Community and Technical College, where Pierce's mother, Calisa Pierce, is the department chair for Transitional Studies.

"I want to help people the way Kim helped me," Bowen said. "We want to keep Kim's name alive and to do what we can to carry on her legacy."

Bowen was a close friend with Kim Pierce prior to her untimely death in an automobile accident on March 3, 2004, and he said Piercewas always helping others with homework and studies while they were still classmates at Logan High School.

The concert is a real team effort with everyone playing a key role in organizing the event which will begin at 5:30 p.m. at the Savas-Kostas Theater on the Logan Campus of Southern.

Calisa Pierce said she appreciates Bowen for planning the fundraiser and that her daughter would be proud.

"We hope this scholarship will continue to grow each year and make a big difference in the lives of every student that receives it," she said.

Headliners for Friday's concert include:

• Riverside Drive.

• The Reptiles

• Adam and Beevare of LTGH

• Meet Me In The Matinee

• Swamp Rat.

Tickets are $5 at the door with all proceeds going to the Kimberly Pierce Memorial Scholarship Fund at Southern West Virginia Community and Technical College.
