NAUGATUCK — The No. 8-ranked Tug Valley Panthers are headed back to the Class AA state basketball tournament after beating the Poca Dots last night, 67-39, at Tug Valley High School in Naugatuck.

The Panthers were led by Channing Preece and Austin Vance with 15 points each. Cousins Nathan Brewer and Michael Evans each scored 10 for Tug Valley.

The Panthers, who have made several trips to the Class AA state tournament, finished as semifinalists last year, losing to Wyoming East. Tug won the state title in 1999 under then head coach Frankie Smith.

The Panthers were in the Class AA state finals in 2001.

The Panthers, coached by Garland “Rabbit” Thompson, will return to Charleston next week for the Big Dance in the Charleston Civic Center Coliseum.

No. 4-seed Tug Valley is scheduled to play No. 5 Magnolia Wednesday at 9 p.m.

Tug Valley improves to 16-5 on the season and got its 11th straight win by beating Poca.
