CHAPMANVILLE – The homestanding Chapmanville Regional High School baseball team edged county rival Man, 3-2, on Monday night at Ted Ellis Field to improve to 10-5 on the season.

Ryan Vinson got the win on the mound and Craig Johnson came in relef and notched the save for the Tigers. Vinson had 11 strikeouts for the game, while Johnson fanned two.

“You’ve got to give their pitchers credit,” Man coach Larry Vance said about the Tigers. “When we got in scoring position they beared down and got us out.”

Man had just five hits in the game. Tyler Grimmett had a solo homer and a double, while Travis Hurley ripped a solo home run and a single. Steven Craddock had the other hit.

“Man is loaded,” Chapmanville coach Eric Ellis said. “They are not rated second for nothing. I’m ticked to death to get the win. Ryan battled and did a good job on the mound. We had two base running mistakes that cost us.”

The Tigers had seven hits – two each by Zac Gresham and Josh Easterling – and one each by Tyler Cox, Anthony Toparis and Jordan Kirk.

Jordan Simpson was the starting pitcher for Man. He went 3/2-3 innings and allowed three runs (one earned) and six hits with five strikeouts and two walks. He also hit two batters. Hurley pitched 2-1/3 innings and gave up no runs and one hit with three strikeouts and no walks.

Man took the lead in the top of the first inning with two outs as Billies’ senior all-stater Travis Hurley ripped a Vinson fast ball over the fence for a solo home run to make it 1-0.

The Tigers took the lead in the home half of the second frame as they scored two runs. Jordan Kirk led off with a single.

Easterling then delivered an RBI double to tie the game at 1-1. Banks then struckout and Johnson was hit by a pitch. Easterling stole second and later scored on a wild pitch to give CRHS a 2-1 lead.

The Tigers pushed their lead to 3-1 in the bottom of third inning off Simpson. Gresham singled, reached second on an error and moved to third base on a balk by Simpson. Tyler Cox then reached base on an error to score Gresham. Cox made the second out trying to score at home plate. Simpson then fanned Kirk to end the inning.

Man got its final run of the game on a solo blast by first baseman Grimmett to cut the deficit to 3-2 in the top of the fourth frame.

The Tigers loaded the bases with two outs in the home half of the fourth inning as Hurley came into pitch.

Simpson robbed Gresham of a hit as he raced back to his shortstop position to take away a hit.

Man had golden opportunities in the fifth and sixth innings but failed to score.

Chapmanville hosts No. 1-ranked Sissonville tonight at 6:30 p.m. Man travels to play at Mateway today at 5.
