MAN — For the second time during his senior year at Man High School, 17-year-old Andrew Eldridge has received a crushing blow.

First, his mother died

"My whole world was flipped upside down, I was the only one at home" Eldridge said. "My mom was everything."

Now, he says he has been banned from his high school prom for having too many unexcused absences.

"Mrs. Manning said I missed too many days and I can't go," Eldridge said.

Eldridge said he missed more than a week of school due to funeral arrangements, hospital visits and time off. Since his mother's death, Eldridge admits he has missed more since his mother's death, but has been struggling to cope with losing her.

Eldridge is asking administrators to make an exception and allow him to attend his senior prom.

"I wish they would just see in their hearts to let me go because I'm never going to be able to go again," said Eldridge.

Eldridges' mother, Shirley, worked at Man High School for more than 10 years as a custodian.

CCCOUGAR You seem to be in the know here .Please enlighten us .I have tried several times to contact someone from the BOE to to talk with ,With no luck .I was directed to the several people each refering me to another,, Teachers student councel, ect. lets put the blame for this on someone other than this young man .Just when did the BOE put children in charge.looks like the state of WV needs to come back into Logan County and get this. mess cleaned up.Agree with the other writer that said election in coming up .Logan County needs a change so do it!!! Get new memebers and they can get things right. Thelma Lou

This is a shame. The young man has suffered enough. What an unfair rule. All rules have circumstances beyond control. The young man may have missed school but wouldn't you if you were that age and your mother died? I know when I lost my mother I missed more than a week of school but back them the BOE had a heart not a silly set of rules. PLEASE let him attent his ONE AND ONLY PROM~~~

There are 2 sides to every story and I don't think you have all the information needed to try and make Man High authorities feel guilty about this situation. They won't comment on this matter, and I don't blame them, but all things aren't as being portrayed the way they should. I have a lot of respect for a school system that will uphold their rules, regardless of public opinion.

I hope someone reconsiders and let's this young man attend his prom. Sounds like he has been though quite a lot.He needs encouragement instead of punishment!!

I think this is a sad time for this young man. The school should look at the grades of this student and realize he worked hard. The loss of a parent is really hard on a young person. My own family went thru this. My brother was to finish the 12th grade when our Mother died. He is a smart man, but due to the fact that his heart was broken he had to take summer school in order to graduate that year. This is a tought time for this young man and the school should be trying to help him not push him to the bottom. If the rest of the class cares about him..Strike have your dance somewhere else.. Young man I am proud of you, you made the grades to graduate and you will be strong for it. God Bless you and know you done what you had to do.

This boy has had a very difficult year. Don't add to his pain by denying him his Senior Prom. A good administrator recognizes the necessity to balance the enforcement of the rules with common sense and compassion. Mrs. Manning, please do the right thing.

I cant believe this, after what this young man has been through, and his mother worked 10 years for the school. How would the staff of Man High School feel if they couldnt work because of the same situation that this young man has went throug. Im sure his mother would have love to see him attend his high scool prom. If this young man cant go to his prom, then they should not even have a prom. If this young man doesnt get to attend his prom, then I think the community should not ever support any events that has anything to do with Man High School. Dont any of your board members and Man High School have a heart. Just think if you were going through what his young man has went through. LET THIS YOUNG MAN ATTEND HIS SENIOR PROM. Im sure you would want your son/daughter to attend his/her senior prom.

This is totally absurd...he can't go to his senior prom because of unexcused absences? Well who made up this holy rule?

Hang in there Andrew, I feel your story is about to get a lot more attention!

This is totally rediculous!

For Pete's sake he just made the 3rd 9 weeks honor roll!

I think this needs to be addressed by an attorney and perhaps a little more media coverage.

Hang in there Andrew, you have close to 2K supporters so far and the numbers are growing fast!

Let the fellow go, he has been through enough, you so called "elites" in Logan county school administration need to show some compassion to this poor boy. Go Andrew!

This is a joke right? Come on leaders; with what this young man has been through and you are cold hearted enough to hold it against him? If this is true as to why he is not allowed; the rules need a hard look. You are administrators, meaning you condict adminstration duties which include understanding issues, but this appears as though someone at the wheel is more asleep.

Let this kid go to the prom! What are these people thinking? It's a shame. This young man has already lost his Mom and that's traumatic enough for a teenager! There are probably others who have been suspended, arrested, etc., at this school and they will be attending. LET HIM ATTEND! IT'S ONLY ONE NIGHT AND HE WILL BE SO HAPPY!!!!!!Get over your "authority" and think about this kid's feeling for once!
