The Logan High School baseball team will have to wait an extra day to play for the Class AAA sectional championship.

That’s because Wednesday night’s elimination game between George Washington and South Charleston was rained out.

The contest will now be played tonight.

The winner will advance to play Logan in Friday night’s finals.

Logan is currently 18-9 overall and 2-0 in the sectional. The Wildcats are in the driver’s seat after winning 3-0 at South Charleston on Monday and then coming away with a 6-2 victory at home on Tuesday over George Washington.

Since the tourney is double-elimination, the Wildcats would have to be beaten twice.

If South Charleston wins over the Patriots tonight, Logan would host the Black Eagles on Friday night at 6:30 p.m. at Roger Gertz Field. If the Patriots win, Logan would have to go to George Washington on Friday.

Logan is gunning for its 11th straight sectional championship and second straight in the Class AAA ranks. The Wildcats were Class AA sectional champs from 2003-08. From 2000-02, Logan won three straight crowns in a Triple-A sectional with GW and St. Albans.

The Wildcats are led by junior shortstop David Brown who was hitting a team-high .463 with four homers and 20 RBI heading into the sectionals. He had 20 doubles and was 31-of-67 at the plate for the season.

On the mound, Brown was 4-4 with a 1.38 ERA. He threw 45-2/3 innings and had allowed just nine earned runs and 37 hits while striking out 54 and walking 15.

Senior Corey Lakatos had a .382 batting average with one homer, 22 RBI and 10 doubles. He was 26-of-68 at the plate. On the mound, Lakatos was 5-2 with a 3.83 ERA. He struck out 32 and walked 12 over 38-1/3 innings and allowed 44 hits and 21 earned runs.

Todd Fleming, Logan’s right fielder and ace pitcher, was hitting .321 with seven RBI, two doubles and four stolen bases. The left-hander was 5-2 on the hill with a 2.55 ERA. He threw 46-2/3 innings and has yielded 17 earned runs and 39 hits with a team-best 73 strikeouts and just 19 walks.

Lakatos was scheduled to pitch on Thursday in the finals.

But with an extra day’s rest due to the rain Fleming would also seem to be available on Friday.
