It’s going to be winner-take-all Class AAA sectional championship game between Logan and George Washington.
The Logan High School baseball team had a chance to wrap up its 11th straight sectional title last Saturday night at George Washington but the Wildcats lost 5-2 to the Patriots to force Thursday’s game at Logan for all the marbles.
Game time is set for 6:30 p.m. at Logan’s Roger Gertz Field.
The game cannot be played any sooner because of the standardized WESTEST which runs until Wednesday. Teams are allowed to practice but no games can be played until Thursday at the earliest.
The sectional was also delayed twice by two rainouts last week, including Logan’s game at GW on Friday.
So the Wildcats and Patriots are playing the waiting game.
No. 10-ranked Logan (18-10) saw its seven-game winning streak halted last Saturday at GW. The red-hot Wildcats had entered the game having won 16 out of their last 18 contests.
George Washington, which lost 6-2 at Logan earlier in the sectional tourney, improved to 23-11.
The Patriots jumped out to a 5-0 lead against the Wildcats in Saturday’s game and rode the arm of winning pitcher Joe Mounts.
With George Washington leading 5-2 in the top of the sixth inning, Mounts was able to get out a bases loaded jam as he struck out Logan’s David Brown on a full count pitch.
Senior left-hander Todd Fleming was the pitcher of record for Logan.
Fleming gave up back-to-back home runs to Alex Levitan and Kirby Patterson in the second inning as the Patriots took the early lead. Levitan’s homer was a three-run blast.
Down 5-1 in the sixth, Logan’s Jeremiah Dalton hit a leadoff homer just barely over the 250-foot short porch down the right field line to make it 5-2.
After a couple of George Washington errors, Logan had the bases full before Mounts was able to get Brown out on a called third strike. Brown went 2-for-4 at the plate for the Wildcats.
Brown is expected to pitch for Logan in Thursday’s finals. He was the winning pitcher for the Cats in last week’s sectional victory over the Patriots.
Logan opened the sectional tourney last Monday with a 3-0 win at South Charleston.
The winner of the Logan-GW game moves on to play in the May 24 Class AAA regional semifinals at either Capital or Riverside.
