Three very special June dinners will be coming up soon according to Lions Club of Logan President Ken Nunley.

The annual Chief Cornstalk District Boy Scouts of America Dinner will be held on June 17 at 6 p.m. at the Logan Country Club in Chapmanville.

NFL pro quarterback Chad Pennington will be the special guest speaker. Pennington was named 2008 NFL Comeback Player of the Year and was a standout and West Virginia celebrity from his college football career.

His senior year in 1999 featured Marshall having an undefeated and untied record (13-0) as Pennington led the team to its third consecutive Mid-American Conference championships and Pennington set school records in several passing categories.

Pennington was selected by the New York Jets in the first round and was the 18th overall pick of the 2000 NFL Draft.

Pennington finished his career at Marshall with 1,026 of 1,619 completions for 13,423 yards and 115 touchdowns, with only 45 interceptions. He led Marshall to the school’s first bowl victory in a 48-29 routing of Louisville in the 1998 Motor City Bowl. Pennington was the bowl game’s MVP.

The “Golden Boy” as he is known to sports writers, has had a stellar career with the New York Jets and the Miami Dolphins. He is the first Dolphins quarterback since Hall of Famer Dan Marino to throw for 3,500 yards.

For his role in the Dolphins’ 10-win turnaround, Pennington received notable MVP consideration from several major media outlets. He received four votes, and finished second to Peyton Manning for the 2008 AP NFL MVP.

Pennington was awarded the Comeback Player of the Year Award, an award which he also won in 2006.

“He has certainly been a popular player in West Virginia for many years and he is known in his personal life for being a supporter of charity,” Nunley said, adding that tickets are on sale now for $125 each and that the Lions Club will have two tickets available for members.

Odis Ratcliff and Roger Perry also plan on attending the event.

All proceeds from the dinner support scouting in the Chief Cornstalk District.

The Chief Cornstalk District serves youths in four counties and saw 65 young men earn the rank of Eagle Scout in 2009. Checks can be made available to the Chief Cornstalk District, PO Box 1254, Logan, WV 25601.

The Lions Club made last minute plans for its own upcoming dinner honoring a very special lady.

The club had wanted to honor Phyllis Adkins in the past, but delayed a roast in her honor due to the fact she was running for office. As soon as the election was over, there was no doubt as to who would get the honors for the Lions 70th Anniversary Dinner.

The Phyllis Adkins Roast will be held on Saturday, June 5 at Logan Middle School, starting at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $25 per person and are available now from local Lions.

Logan sports legend Willie Akers will be the special guest speaker at the roast.

“Get your tickets now, because we have to let the caterer know how many meals to prepare,” Nunley said. “We should be able to sell ten tickets each and I expect every Lion to be there. “

Nunley said on June 1 the Lions will have a special dinner at Pickin’ N The Park at Chief Logan State Park on June 1 at 6 p.m. Dinner will be provided at no charge.

“But you can make a donation if you wish,” Nunley said.
