Coal miners honored during Freedom Festival

The WV Freedom Festival and the Citizens for Coal group held a Celebration of Life on Friday July 2nd, during Coal Night of the Festival.

The event was organized by Roger Horton and speakers included Logan County Commission President Art Kirkendoll, Senator Ron Stollings (D-Boone) and an official representing Congressman Nick Joe Rahall honored coal miners during the ceremony.

A special tribute was held for the lost miners from the Upper Big Branch Mine, Aracoma Coal, Kermit and Alma. The fallen miners were honored by citizens dressed as Coal Miners representing the lives that were lost.

Special readings were also conducted honoring Senator Byrd and coal in southern West Virginia.
