Thursday Readers Book Club, an informal book discussion group sponsored by Coalfield Writers, will continue meetings this fall. Book club meetings are held at Chiricos Restaurant, in Logan, beginning at 6:00 p.m., and the public is invited to attend. The meetings are free and open to anyone with an interest in reading interesting books.

Each meeting features a discussion of the monthly book, friendship and fellowship. The discussions are not scholarly analysis of the books, but rather are friendly conversations about the positives and negatives of the book of the month. The only requirement for attending is that participants have read enough of the book to be able to talk about it with the group.

Each year the advisory council for book club attempts to choose a wide range of books for the discussion group. According to facilitator Diana Clay We want to stretch our reading comfort level, by reading books that we might not have considered before book club. Each group of book selections usually includes a book by a West Virginia author, a book from the classic list, and books that have been recently popular. The spring schedule will feature humor and memoir, including:

The September 16th book is Half Broke Horses by Jeanetta Walls. This creative non-fiction memoir Walls, the author of The Glass Castle tells the story of her mother and grandmothers unconventional lives.

The October 14th selection is Loving Frank, by Nancy Horan. This novel explores Frank Lloyd Wright and Mamah Cheney's little-known and often dismissed as scandal love story Loving Frank is a remarkable literary achievement, tenderly acute and even-handed in even the most heartbreaking moments.

The November 11th selection is Nefertiti by Michelle Moran. This fictionalized life of the notorious Egyptian queen is told from the point of view of her younger sister, Mutnodjmet. The details of Egyptian life and history are well researched, and this fictionalized story paints and intriguing portrait of one of the most important women of Egyptian history.

The December 16th selection is The Christmas List by Richard Paul Evans. Evans, best known for his book The Christmas Box Collection, has again revisited the Christmas theme in this book. It is a book that reminds the reader about the true meaning and spirit of Christmas which is unconditional love and the peace that comes from seeking forgiveness.
