IRONTON, Ohio — Paul Wellman, 88, of Ironton, Ohio, formerly from across the river at Three Mile Curve near McConnell, passed away Tuesday, August 24, 2010, at Best Care Nursing and Rehab. in Wheelersburg, Ohio.

Born December 23, 1921, at Whitman, he was a son of the late Robert Lee and Lillian B. Savage Wellman.

Mr. Wellman was a retired construction foreman with over 30 years building coal tipples and conveyor belts and a member of the United Mine Workers of America and the First Baptist Church of Logan. He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II as Air Traffic Controller in South Pacific Islands of Guadalcanal, New Caledonia and Emiru. He loved to share memories of his war time experiences with family and friends. Paul was an avid photographer and shared many photos with family and friends.

Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Elizabeth Trump Wellman; six sons and two daughters; Grover Lee (Janet) Wellman of Proctorville Ohio, Judy (Mike) Barber and Jean (Roy) Dixon, both of Ironton Ohio, John (Betty) Wellman of Lexington, Ky., Jack (Peggy) Wellman of Gulfport, Miss., Steven (Tammy) Wellman of Logan, David (Susan) Wellman of Martinsburg and Ron (Justina) Wellman of Pickerington, Ohio; 20 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday, August 28, at the Honaker Funeral Home with Rev. John E. Godby and Rev. Gregg Hickman officiating. Burial will follow in Highland Memory Gardens at Godby.

His grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Visitation will be 6-9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
