Man, last year’s Class A state runner-up team, was second in the Single-A poll, while Chapmanville was rated sixth in Class AA.
The poll was conducted by the Daily Mail sports staff and a handful of sportswriters from across the state.
Weirton Madonna, which beat the Hillbillies last year in the Super Six to win the Class A state championship, is ranked first in the preseason poll.
Madonna, which opens the season Saturday against Valley Wetzel, received eight of the 20 first-place votes.
Second-place Man received one first place vote. The Billies open the season Friday at 3A Logan.
Williamstown is third in the Class A poll, followed by Wheeling Central, Richwood, Bishop Donahue, Fayetteville, St. Marys, Clay-Battelle and Moorefield. Wheeling Central had seven first-place votes by the media.
Man beat Richwood and Fayetteville in last year’s Class A playoffs.
Wahama, Mount Hope, Buffalo, Tucker County, East Hardy, Meadow Bridge, Notre Dame, Valley Fayette, Wirt County, Calhoun County, Parkersburg Catholic, Pendleton County, Matewan, Paden City, South Harrison and Van also received votes.
In the Class AA poll, defending state champion Bluefield was No. 1. The Beavers received 17 out of the 20 first place votes.
Magnolia was second, Ravenswood third, Wayne fourth, Keyser fifth, Chapmanville sixth, Point Pleasant seventh, Pikeview eighth, Oak Glen ninth and Frankfort 10th.
Chapmanville opens the season Friday night at Sissonville.
Wayne, which opens the season at Keyser Friday in a battle of top 10 teams, is a Cardinal Conference opponent of the Tigers this fall. Point Pleasant, another CC school, is also on the slate.
Others receiving votes were James Monroe, Grafton, Weir, Poca, Scott, Sherman, Westside, Herbert Hoover, Riverview, Braxton County, Liberty Raleigh, Greenbrier West, Roane County, Philip Barbour and Shady Spring.
In the Class AAA poll, defending state champion South Charleston is No. 1. The Black Eagles got 19 out of the 20 first-place votes.
University was second, Brooke third, Martinsburg fourth, Capital fifth, George Washington sixth, Morgantown seventh, Parkersburg eighth, Bridgeport ninth and Musselman 10th.
Fairmont, Spring Valley, Wheeling Park, Hurricane, St. Albans, Riverside, Lewis County, Cabell Midland, Princeton, Parkersburg South, Nicholas County, Robert C. Byrd and Beckley also received votes in the 3A poll.
