VERDUNVILLE — It was an exciting day for children at Verdunville Elementary School on Wednesday when National Fire Prevention Week came vividly to life thanks to local first responders from the Verdunville Volunteer Fire Department and Air Evac.

Firefighters and the air crew discussed fire safety and prevention and getting injured people to safety quickly and showed off their equipment and gear including a special surprise — a helicopter landing on the front lawn of the school.

“This week is national Fire Prevention week across the state and this is something we are doing to get the message out to young people,” said Verdunville Volunteer Fire Department Captain Jeff Williamson.

Ironically, Williamson and fellow firefighter Pete Conley were former students at the school, noted Verdunville Principal Barbara Porter.

Following the presentation, the firefighters and air crew were invited to have lunch at the school.

Principal Porter told The Logan Banner that Captain Williamson also has children attending the school now.

Porter also noted that the Air Evan flight team consisted of many military veterans.

“This year at Verdunville we will have our annual Veterans celebration on November 10 at 10 a.m.,” Porter said.

“It promises to be a very special day at the school and we will have a lot for veterans, their family and our community.”
