William Alderman, Associate Professor/Coordinator of Mine Management of Southern West Virginia Community and Technical College, was recently awarded the “Because of You” Educator of the Year at the 2012 Miners’ Celebration at Tamarack. The presentation was made by Dr. Stephan Kopp, President of Marshall University and Homer Hickam of ‘Rocket Boys’ fame.
Alderman was nominated for providing innovation and leadership in the development of curriculum and knowledge of the mining industry and its relationship with coal communities and the state.
“We are so proud to have Bill recognized with this distinguished honor,” said Joanne Yeager Tomblin, First Lady/President of Southern West Virginia Community and Technical College. “William Alderman is a remarkable, engaged scholar and teacher, but what makes him exceptional is his ability to translate his curriculum into a platform for real application within the coal industry.”
Alderman received his Master degree from Regent University Graduate School of Business, Bachelor degree from Bluefield State and his Associate degree from Southern. He has over 20 years’ experience in the mining industry and holds certifications in Mine Foreman, Blasting and Slurry Impoundment Inspection.
“The award could not have been bestowed on any individual more deserving than Bill,” said Dr. Gail Hall, Department Chair for Business at Southern. “Mr. Alderman arose to the challenge of developing the Mine Management A.A.S. program for Southern and has built it into a strong, viable program that is meeting industry needs. We commend him for this recognition and the Department is quite proud of this achievement,” she added.
The Mine Management Program at Southern is designed to prepare and to educate individuals for front-line or mid-level positions in the mining industry, both surface and underground. Alderman was influential in developing the curriculum for the program.
The conference theme ‘Past, Present, Future’ is echoed through Alderman’s goals for the program.
“Mining is such a vital part of our economy and its socio-economical culture. It is imperative to preserve the storied history as well as educate on the innovative trends that continue,” said Alderman. “An educated workforce and community are well-versed on the essential phases of mining and the skills required to be effective in a technical role or a managerial role.”
“I am honored to have been chosen from a pool of several colleges and universities; however, I am proud of the program and more proud of student successes,” said Alderman.
