A West Virginia State Police officer accompanied a Child Protective Services employee to perform a safety check for the temporary placement of a child.

During the safety check, both officers discovered Anthony Arlie McCoy, 25, of Whitman, was growing marijuana at his residence.

Four to six plants were on the property. The accused confessed to the officers saying he was growing the plants just to see if he could.

McCoy was arrested and charged with cultivation of marijuana. He was released under a $5,000 bond.
