CHAPMANVILLE — It’s been a good start, albeit a frigidly cold start, to the 2013 season for the Chapmanville Middle School baseball team.

The CMS Tigers are 2-0 after pounding on Van, 14-4 on March 14 in the opener and then coming back to defeat Madison 13-5 last Saturday.

In the opener, Chapmanville battled freezing cold temperatures in the 30s and came away with a victory over the Van Bulldogs at a blustery Ted Ellis Field in Chapmanville.

Chris Bailey got the nod on the hill and pitched 2 2/3 innings, striking out six and walking two. He was relieved by Joshua Zigmond, who went 3 1/3 innings, striking out seven and walking one. Timothy Bigley finished the game, throwing one inning.

First-year CMS coach Dwight Dingess said he was pleased with his pitchers.

“The weather was cold and I didn’t want to let them throw too much,” Dingess said.

Offensively, the Tigers were led by Dylan Brown and Dakota McCormick, who had two singles each. Dakota Collins and Devin Hensley also singled for Chapmanville.

“Our bats started off a little slow but came around,” Dingess said. “Chris hit a monster shot — an inside-the-park homer that set the pace for us offensively.”

Last Saturday, the CMS baseball team had some better weather as the Tigers roared past the Madison RedHawks.

Noah Dingess led the way at the plate for the Tigers. The switch-hitting centerfielder was 3-for-5 on the night, with two hits from the right side and one from the left.

Chris Bailey followed with two doubles and was intentionally walked twice.

Adam Vance contributed two singles, while Joshua Zigmond, Ryan Craddock, Hunter Long and Conner Mullins each added singles to round out the 11 hits by the Tigers.

Bailey threw five innings, striking out nine and walking two.

Zigmond tossed two innings and walked one.

Coach Dingess said he was happy with his team’s performance.

“Overall I am pleased with the way we played today,” he said. “We had one inning that was riddled with fielding errors, but you will have that this early in the season. The weather has not cooperated so we have not been able to be on the field much. We are playing a tougher schedule this season as we have added Winfield, Logan, Ripley and Poca. Poca is now a conference foe. I believe our kids are really excited to play some different opponents.”

The Tigers are scheduled to be in action again on Saturday as CMS plays at Hamlin.
