WHARNCLIFFE - John Lewis Smith Sr., 76, of Wharncliffe, died Sunday, February 10, 2013, at his home.

Smith was born October 17, 1936, at Cedar/Beech Creek, the son of the late Melvin and Maudie (Hatfield) Smith. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers: Melvin Smith Jr., Troy and Roosevelt Smith; three sisters: Thelma Rhodes, Josephine Trent and Blanch (Dee) Engram.

Mr. Smith was a draftsman, worked as an engineer at Island Creek Coal Co., worked at W & P and Consol Coal Co. He was a member of the Ben Creek Church of Christ. He worked with the Shepherd of the Hills Food Pantry and he was on the Ben Creek Fire Dept. Board. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force.

Survivors include his loving wife of 50 years, Shelby Jean (Mullins) Smith; two daughters: Sandra Ann (Bob) Keator, of Harrisburg, N.C., Tina Louise (Donnie) Spence, of Delbarton; son John Lewis (Taunia) Smith Jr., of Varney; six grandchildren: Whitney Laurae Thompson, of Nashville, Tenn., Robert Lewis Thompson, of Albemarle, N.C., Kimberlee Nicole Spence and Katelynn Shelby Spence, both of Delbarton, Sydney Hope Smith and John Tre’ Lewis Smith III, both of Varney; two brothers: Roger Smith, of Phelps, Ky., and Larry Smith, of Tennessee; two sisters: Sylvia Prince, of Chicago, Ill., and Joyce Fields, of Charleston; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, February 15, 2013, at the Ben Creek Church of Christ, with ministers Gene Clemons, Denny May and Cletis Smith. Burial will be in the Smith Cemetery at Cedar/Beech Creek.

Pallbearers will be Grandson Bobby Thompson, Nephews Matt Kennedy, Ronnie Daniel, Dale, Mike and Keith Smith, Travis Simpkins and Mike Spradlin. Honorary pallbearers will be Grandson John Tre’ Lewis Smith III and Bob Keator.
