VAN - Guard David Stewart netted 17 points for the Van Bulldogs as they exploded for 27 points in the third quarter to help lead them to a 67-52 win over visiting Mount View High School.

Van (7-9) inched closer to a .500 record on the season with the win as the Bulldogs were down 35-33 at intermission, but came storming back to take control of the contest.

Marqus Ray kept the Golden Knights close as he dropped in 21 points, but it wasn't enough to combat the defense by the Bulldogs in the fourth period as they held on for the win.

Van got timely shooting from Gavin Smith in the second half as he also pulled down 15 rebounds to notch a double-double.

Van coach Dave Gogas, the CVN coach of the year in 2017-18, said that the win was a team effort and he was pleased with the defense his squad played in the contest.

"We played good team defense and balanced team scoring where the key components to the win," he said.

The Bulldogs collected 10 steals in the game and outrebounded the Golden Knights. Van hit 8-of-13 free throws in the game and Stewart and Gavin Smith canned a pair of 3-point buckets each. The 27-point third frame proved decisive for Van as they held their opponent to 8 points in the quarter and only 17 in the second half.

For Mount View (6-11) the loss was their third in their last six games. The Golden Knights have turned a season around that started (1-6).

The Bulldogs will meet cross-county rival Sherman on Feb. 15 at Seth as the Tide will try to get revenge for a Van victory on Jan. 11.

Van will face Class AA Sissonville at home on Feb. 21 to wrap up their regular season before sectional play begins.
