SETH - It only took a few minutes for the Tolsia Rebels to extend a lead that would be insurmountable for Sherman High to overcome as the Tide boys basketball team fell to Tolsia in Seth, 85-47.
The Rebels (4-2), much like every team Sherman has played this season, used a pressure defense that pressed Tide ball handlers and forced turnovers throughout the game. Tolsia led by 23 after the first quarter and the young Tide could not claw back into the contest.
"They are a very good team," said Sherman coach Dave Henderson. "They are fast and they have multiple guys who can put it on the floor and score."
Henderson said that while he is getting his underclassmen plenty of minutes, his senior-less roster must grow with every game they play.
"In this game, I didn't see us progress or regress in any way," he said. "You have to credit Tolsia for that to some extent. They are well coached. We turned the ball over several times right off the bat and I think it killed our confidence and that is an area we have to grow in. We'll flourish as a team when we can do some things to build our confidence."
Sherman (0-5) had trouble defensively with a trio of scorers in Austin Salmons, Rob Cantrell and Jesse Muncy, who collectively netted 50 points for the Rebels. It is worthy of noting that many of those points came on the backside of Tide turnovers that led to buckets in transition, not out of the Rebels' half-court offensive set.
"We have to continue to work on beating the press and when we are able to do that and make other teams pay for that, we'll see more opportunities to score," Henderson added.
Sherman was down 50-14 at intermission but played much better in the second half. Chris Abbott led the Tide in the opening half, but post-man Brian Busby, who is averaging 11 rebounds per game, found his shooting touch in the third period as he sank a pair of buckets. Wyatt Kincaid and Logan Green led a Tide surge in the fourth frame where Sherman won their only quarter of the game, 18-13.
Sherman will host Tug Valley on Jan. 4 and Buffalo on Jan. 8 before traveling to their rival Van in a cross-county collision on Jan. 11.
