LOGAN — Santa Claus will make an appearance in the City of Logan this Saturday, but instead of coming in on his sled, he will be arriving in a more unusual way: by helicopter.
The city has partnered with the Abundant Life Worship Center for this year's Team Santa event. During the event, more than 1,000 gifts and more than 300 pairs of shoes will be given to children.
Each child will get a free gift from Santa, and free hot chocolate and free pictures with Santa also will be offered.
Santa will make his triumphant entrance into Logan via a Bell UH-1 Iroquois helicopter, more commonly known as a "Huey," piloted by Mike Holbrook. The copter will land in the lot beside Premier Bank, and Santa will officially make his appearance at 1 p.m. in the empty lot at the West Virginia State Building.
"I think the community is going to be overwhelmed. I think it's going to be awesome," said Gary Wilson, pastor of the Abundant Life Worship Center. "I think we're going to give away every toy we got, every pair of shoes we got and everybody's going to have a great time."
Wilson adds that the city, which has hosted the Team Santa event for several years now, has been great to work with and is glad his church could partner to make it "bigger and better."
"I would just like to say how well the city has responded and worked with us," Wilson said. "It's just been a great partnership."
"We are so excited to have a community partner like Abundant Life," said City of Logan Clerk, Amber Miller-Viars. "This is the city's ninth year doing Team Santa and Abundant Life has helped us take it to the next level."
