CHAPMANVILLE - Josh Rakes and the Chapmanville Regional High School baseball team got off to a good start on Monday as the Tigers swept the Mingo Central Miners 12-2 and 17-1 in a season opening doubleheader at Ted Ellis Field.

It was the head coaching debut for new Tigers' skipper Josh Rakes, who took over for Eric Ellis.

In the first game, Chapmanville outhit the Miners 11-2 as new Tiger Casey Hurley notched the win on the mound, going four innings and allowing two runs on one hit with three strikeouts and three walks. Ethan Ferrell pitched the final two scoreless innings.

Conner Mullins, Hurley, Chase Berry, Dakota Collins and Garrett Adkins each had two hits for the Tigers. Berry drove in four runs. Hurley had a triple, while J.D. Ferrell, Mullins and Collins each doubled.

Andrew Allen and Ashton Deskins each had singles for Mingo Central. Allen was the starting and losing pitcher.

In Game 2, Chapmanville plated three runs in each of the first two innings, then exploded for 11 runs in the third. The game was called after five innings due to the mercy rule.

Adkins led the Tigers' 13-hit attack as he was 3-for-4 at the plate with an RBI. Hurley, Evan Plumley and Brennan Williams each had two hits. Williams had a triple and knocked in four runs.

Collins and Berry both doubled for CRHS.

Plumley was the starting and winning pitcher for the Tigers. He hurled 3.1 innings and fanned seven batters. J.D. Ferrell closed out the last 1.2 innings.

Allen was 3-for-3 with one RBI to lead the Miners' bats.

Mingo Central (0-2, 0-2) was slated to host Tolsia on Tuesday and host Sheldon Clark, Kentucky on Thursday at 6 p.m.

Chapmanville was scheduled to play at Man on Tuesday and go to Poca on Friday at 7 p.m.


LOGAN 8, POCA 0: Jaycee Abbott tossed a five-inning shutout on Tuesday at home as the Logan High School softball team won 8-0 over Poca at Logan. No further details were available.

Logan (1-1 overall and 1-0 in the Cardinal Conference) was scheduled to host Man on Tuesday. The Lady Cats play at Wayne on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m., hosts Scott on Thursday and travels to Nitro on Friday.

GEORGE WASHINGTON 14, LOGAN 3: The Logan High School softball team lost 14-3 to Class AAA George Washington in Saturday afternoon's season opener at Logan.

The game was the head coaching debut for Logan first-year coach Jason Davis, a former longtime assistant coach under longtime mentor Randy Robinette and others. No further details were available on the game.

GW, a Class AAA state tournament team from a year ago, is coached by Kim Darby, a Logan High School graduate and former LHS softball player.

SHERMAN 8, CHAPMANVILLE 1: The Chapmanville Regional High School softball team lost 8-1 at Sherman in its season opener on Monday.

Sierra Cook was the starting and losing pitcher for CRHS (0-1). She was relieved by Tabitha Adkins.

Jenna Barker was 2-for-3 for CRHS. Ashleigh Mahon had a double and Shea Pridemore had a single.

Sherman hit three home runs in the game.

Chapmanville was scheduled to host Mingo Central on Tuesday. The Lady Tigers host Poca on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.
