MAN — The Man Lady Hillbillies basketball team dropped three out of four games last week, losing at home to River View (49-43) last Monday, at Phelps, Kentucky (68-61) on Tuesday, and at Tolsia (61-54) on Thursday before ending the skid with a 47-36 win at Meadow Bridge on Friday.
River View 49, Man 43:
River View held an early 6-5 lead with 5:08 left in the first quarter after a jumper from Man’s Jenna Baisden.
The visiting Lady Raiders scored another basket to lead by three at 8-5, but another Baisden jump shot and one free throw each from Tori Honaker and Megan McCoy helped the Lady Billies to a 9-8 lead after one quarter.
River View’s Kaylee Blankenship scored a bucket to put them in front 10-9 just 21 seconds into the second period, but then, Man went on a 7-0 run, capped of by a put back layup from Kami Anderson with 6:22 until halftime. They led 16-10.
The Lady Raiders scored four consecutive points to trail by just two at 16-14, but 6-0 run by the Lady Billies ensued, and they led 22-14 with 2:48 left in the half.
However, River View ended the first half on an 8-0 run. The game was tied 22-22 as the two teams went into the locker room for the intermission.
Man started the third frame with four straight points and a 26-22 lead, but the Lady Raiders answered with a 7-0 run to bolt in front 29-26 with 4:21 left in the third quarter.
McCoy then hit a free throw for the Lady Billies to make it a 29-27 contest, but River View came right back with a 6-0 advantage to end the third stanza including back-to-back layups from Haylie Payne in the final minute.
The road team led 35-27 going into the game’s final period.
The Lady Billies came out firing on all cylinders to start the fourth quarter as they went on a 9-0 run.
With 6:25 left in the ballgame, Baisden buried a three-pointer to put Man in front 36-35 and the home crowd cheered like crazy.
The Lady Raiders, however, responded with a 5-0 run to regain command at 40-36 with 4:27 remaining.
Man tied the game back up at 40-40 with 3:42 left after a basket from Honaker, but it was all River View from that point forward.
The Lady Raiders went on an 8-0 run which included stout defense as well as clutch free throws in the final minute. Man didn’t score again until a three by Anderson which made it 48-43 with 12 seconds left.
River View left with a 49-43 road victory.
Baisden led the Lady Billies in scoring with 14 points on the night along with two made threes. McCoy also ventured into double figures with 12 points of her own and made eight of 10 shots from the free throw line.
Anderson contributed nine points with a trey while hitting four of six foul shots, and Honaker added eight points with a three while going 1-for-3 from the line.
Man head coach Brad Copeland was extremely proud of the fight and effort his team displayed despite the loss.
“When you coach these girls every single day and you see that they are giving every single thing they’ve got, they give it, and they give it in practice, they give it in the game, and it shows out there in the game,” Copeland said.
Man 61, Phelps (KY) 68:
Kami Anderson led the Lady Billies with 17 points along with four rebounds, four assists and three steals. Jenna Baisden turned in 15 points with five boards, an assist and a steal while Tori Honaker notched a double-double with 11 points, 13 rebounds and four assists.
Jace Baisden tallied nine points with eight rebounds and an assist, and Megan McCoy scored seven points and had four rebounds. Braylee Thompson grabbed a rebound, and Emilee Deel had an assist.
Man 54, Tolsia 61:
Tori Honaker led Man with 19 points, 13 rebounds, two assists and a steal. Kami Anderson had 13 points, nine rebounds, five assists and two steals while Jenna Baisden scored 13 of her own with four boards and two assists.
Megan McCoy added six points along with five rebounds, two steals and an assist, Jace Baisden had two points with six rebounds, and Braylee Thompson picked up two rebounds with one point.
Man 47, Meadow Bridge 36:
Jenna Baisden was the top scorer for the Lady Billies with 17 points, nine rebounds and two assists. Tori Honaker had 14 points with nine boards, three steals and an assist.
Kami Anderson had six points with seven rebounds, five steals and four assists. Megan McCoy also scored six points with seven rebounds, four steals and two assists, and Jace Baisden tallied four points with five rebounds and a steal.
Braylee Thompson had a rebound and an assist, Kylie Stevens had a steal, and Melody Rozell grabbed a rebound.
Man now sits at 5-12 overall after the last four games.
