MAN - The Belfry Pirates sailed past the Man High School baseball team, plating seven runs in the top of the first inning and eventually rolling to a 17-4 win in five innings at Man on Friday night.
Belfry led 7-2 after one inning, 9-3 after two and exploded for eight more big runs in the third inning.
The Pirates outhit Man 9-3 and the Billies committed four errors to Belfry's one.
Belfry also took advantage of eight issued walks by Man pitchers. Cameron Frye, who didn't survive the first inning, was the starting and losing pitcher. Corey Miller and Tyler Lafferty pitched in relief.
Josh Lambert was 2-for-3 to lead the Man bats. Jacob Frazier had the other hit. Dylan McCormick and Brady Hall both had one RBI.
Sean Cochran had three hits for Belfry and Austin Fields hit a grand slam and knocked in five RBIs. Moses Wiedel and Avery Browning both drove in two runs.
WINFIELD 5, LOGAN 4: The Logan High School baseball team fell 5-4 on Thursday night at Winfield in Cardinal Conference action in the season opener for the Wildcats.
Logan was outhit by the Generals 5-4.
Dawson Beckett had a double and two RBIs to lead the Logan bats. Lane Harmon also doubled and Conner McGrew and Peyton Branham both singled.
Branham was Logan's starting pitcher. He went four innings and struck out seven while giving up one earned run. Beckett and Braydon McClung each pitched an inning in relief. Beckett yielded three unearned runs and fanned two. McClung gave up one unearned run and struck out three.
Logan plated three runs in the top of the fourth to lead 3-1. Winfield scored three runs in the five to tie it up 4-4 and tacked on the winning run in the sixth.
Both teams committed two errors.
"We played OK for our first game," Logan coach Kevin Gertz said. "Two misplayed balls allowed four unearned runs. But that's high school baseball. Our pitching was very solid with 12 K's and two walks but both of them scored being lead off walks. Tough to pitch that way. But we swung the bats a bit better than expected."
The Wildcats (0-1, 0-1) were scheduled to host Mingo Central on Saturday in a doubleheader. Logan plays at Westside on Monday and heads to Scott on Thursday.
POCA 6, CHAPMANVILLE 2: Ethan Payne went 3-for-4 at the plate to lead Poca to a 6-2 win over Chapmanville on Friday night at Poca.
Garrett Adkins was 2-for-3 to lead Chapmanville (3-1 overall and 2-1 in the Cardinal Conference).
Conner Mullins had a hit and an RBI. Casey Hurley, Chase Berry, J.D. Ferrell and Brennan Williams each had a hit.
Berry was the Tigers' starting pitcher. He went four innings and allowed five runs (two earned) on eight hits with eight strikeouts and no walks. J.D. Ferrell pitched the last two innings, giving up one earned run on two hits with one strikeout.
The Tigers had three errors in the game to one for the Dots.
CRHS was slated to host Oak Hill on Saturday. The Tigers travel to Van on Tuesday in a 6:30 p.m. contest.
NITRO 6, LOGAN 1: The Logan High School softball team's lack of offensive firepower continued on Friday night at Nitro as the Lady Cats lost 6-1.
Logan dropped to 1-4, 1-3 with the loss. Logan was coming off losses to Wayne (7-1) and Man (3-1).

Logan was slated to host Sherman on Saturday before hosting Mingo Central on Monday at 5:30 p.m.
n The Chapmanville softball team's home game Thursday against Class AA two-time defending state champion Herbert Hoover was postponed due to rain. The Lady Tigers have been state runner-ups to the Huskies in each of the last two seasons.
